Youth S was referred to our Family Service Centre (FSC) because of concerns about his at-risk behaviours. He faced multiple problems, such as frequent involvement in fights that led to suspension from school, affiliation with gangs, engagement in criminal activities, and anger management issues. Additionally, Youth S received minimal support from his family due to complex family issues, which added to his struggles. Because of these stressors and negative experiences, Youth S felt lost about his future.

Social worker Zying, as he is affectionately called by the youths and colleagues, stepped in to help Youth S. Zying worked closely with the school to advocate for Youth S and get him back into the academic environment. This was crucial in providing him stability and a sense of direction. To address the family issues, Zying conducted family sessions aimed at strengthening the family’s support.

Recognising the need for a positive outlet for his emotions, Zying encouraged Youth S to join a boxing programme. This programme helped him focus better, release his emotions in a controlled environment, and increase his self-control. Through boxing, Youth S found a healthy way to manage his anger and energy, reducing his involvement in fights and other anti-social activities.

The support from Zying and the Youth GO! programme has had a significant impact on Youth S. He is now engaged in school, no longer involved with gangs, and has stopped participating in criminal activities. The changes in his behaviour show the effectiveness of the support he received. Youth S now has a clearer view of his future, wanting to secure a stable job, earn money, and build a respectable family.

Youth S’s story highlights the importance of dedicated social workers and supportive programmes in the lives of at-risk youths. The combination of educational advocacy, family support, and positive outlets for emotional expression has helped him overcome significant challenges and set a new course for his life.

Moving forward, Youth S continues to engage actively in his education and personal development, driven by the desire to create a better future for himself. Although the journey ahead may still have challenges, with the foundation of support he has received, Youth S is well-equipped to navigate and overcome them, embodying the hope and potential that all youths deserve.
