Fei Yue is proud to announce that Janet Liam, our Assistant Senior Social Worker and Assistant Manager at Fei Yue Community Services, has received the Promising Social Worker Award. Ms Liam has devoted the last five years to supporting offenders, former offenders, and their families, having made a career shift from administrative work to social work.
Realising that a nine-to-five office job was not for her, she wanted to utilise her strengths as an empathetic listener. After speaking with pregnant inmates, she discovered a lack of support for these women, who often felt anxious and fearful about decision-making and motherhood.
In response, Ms Liam, launched Project Baby in 2020. This programme helps incarcerated pregnant women understand their care options for their unborn children and provides essential emotional support throughout their motherhood journey.
“We wanted to create a programme that best meets their needs, not just in terms of caregiving plans but also their emotional well-being, and create a safe space for them to share their challenges as a mother – on top of being in a prison environment.” – Ms Liam
