Mdm Ng Ah Tien, aged 84, joined Fei Yue Active Ageing Centre (Bukit Batok) in 2020 with her husband after hearing about it from her peers. She suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, which causes frequent sweating, shakiness, trembling, poor balance, and sleeplessness. Her doctor from Singapore General Hospital (SGH) recommended regular exercise, so she joined our HAPPY Exercise and other programmes at the Active Ageing Centre (AAC).

Once, Mdm Ng had a fall at the Community Nursing Post. The community nurse, Samantha, recommended that she join Gym Tonic under the Jin Jia Ho programme, which caters to frail seniors. Mdm Ng found Gym Tonic to be a suitable way to pursue an active lifestyle and continues to attend gym sessions.

When Mdm Ng first joined us, she struggled to walk straight and frequently fell, relying heavily on her umbrella for stability. She also faced difficulties using the gym machines. However, with consistent exercise under the guidance of our trainers, her health and walking have greatly improved. She can now walk longer distances, her posture has straightened, and her fear of falling has reduced.

Fei Yue also invited Mdm Ng to attend talks organised by Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and St Luke’s Hospital, which she found helpful for understanding how to lead a healthy and active aging lifestyle. Beyond her health improvements, the AAC has significantly impacted her social life and psychological well-being. She regularly participates in Chair Zumba, Wow Exercise, Rummy-O, colouring, and craft activities, and has made many friends at the centre. She also finds our new Empower Digital (handphone learning) programme very useful. She used to feel stressed, demotivated, and had difficulty sleeping, but this has improved drastically since joining us. She now sleeps more peacefully.

Mdm Ng has grown very comfortable at our centre, finding all our staff and volunteers encouraging, helpful, and pleasant. She recalls a touching moment when she suffered a fall at the centre, and the nurse called to check on her. Mdm Ng and her husband continue to actively participate in our activities. We are pleased to have played a part in Mdm Ng’s journey and will continue to provide her with the support she needs.
