Mdm Leong’s grandchildren joke that they could start a music band together, a thought that amuses her. For this devoted grandmother, who instilled a love for music in both her children and grandchildren, learning to play the keyboard at 81 is a dream come true. Her grandchildren, who play the flute, are incredibly proud of her. While many her age might shy away from learning something new, Mdm Leong firmly believes it is never too late for firsts.
Her passion for music began in primary school when she picked up the harmonica, but opportunities to pursue it further were scarce. As life unfolded, raising a family and later her career as a dental technician took priority. Now, thanks to Fei Yue’s The Arts Market – Singapore’s first arts academy for seniors – she has found a way to pursue her lifelong dream to learn more musical instruments.
Located in Tampines, The Arts Market was launched in 2016 by Family Central, an arm of Fei Yue Community Services, to promote active ageing and lifelong learning. It offers a diverse range of courses, including erhu, ukulele, violin, Chinese ink painting, and charcoal drawing. These activities promote seniors’ cognitive function, improve dexterity, and help them explore new interests in a welcoming, age-friendly environment. Participants also have opportunities to give back to the community with their talents. For instance, the Ukulele Interest Group has performed at senior centres and Christmas at Gardens by the Bay.
Mdm Leong first learned about the keyboard classes from a neighbour. Initially hesitant due to minor issues with her left hand, she was encouraged by her teacher’s patience and support. She has been persistent in her practice and has become more confident with the instrument.

The National Silver Academy (NSA)’s support has been crucial for Fei Yue to make these courses highly accessible. The NSA provides generous subsidies, and seniors can also use their SkillsFuture credits to offset costs. Fei Yue was one of the first NSA partners to offer keyboard classes to seniors. To date, Fei Yue has conducted 287 runs of keyboard classes, engaging over 3,400 participants. With classes available in both English and Chinese, the program ensures inclusivity for seniors from diverse backgrounds.
Mdm Leong takes pride in having completed three levels of keyboard classes and remains committed to her musical journey. She draws inspiration from renowned pianist Wu Yili, recalling a moving video of the famed musician performing at 86. With that image in mind, she is determined to keep playing, proving that passion and learning have no age limit.
When friends use age as an excuse not to try something new, Mdm Leong quickly counters with her own story. For her, retirement is not a time to slow down but an opportunity to pursue her dreams. Learning the keyboard is just one of the many ways she embraces this spirit.
